Dr. Marujo earned his Medical Degree in 1981 from the University of São Paulo Medical School. His academic life was marked, from the beginning, by a strong interest and a relentless focus on everything related to structure, forms and shapes that evolved, in the last years of his medical education, into a passionate quest for surgical acumen and clinical excellence. In the two years that followed his graduation he immersed himself in the Residency Program in General Surgery at the General Hospital of Ribeirão Preto. After completing his Residency training, he was already recognized by his peers as having an unusually sharp sense of aesthetic and an attention to detail and a surgical ability that already set him out of the ordinary and led to a very natural choice for Plastic Surgery.

During this time, besides his passion for aesthetic surgery he also developed a strong interest in Burn Patients and Facial Trauma, areas in which he eventually became a reference in Brazil.

In 1987 he went to the Unites States to observe first-hand the recent advancements in Epithelium Culture and Skin Bank Management at the Shrinnes Burn Institute (Professor John Burke`s Service) of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Currently, besides the reputation he earned, in Brazil and abroad, as one of the most prominent and talented Plastic Surgeons of our time, he is a founding member of the Brazilian Society for Burn Injuries and the Latin American Federation for Burns (FELAQ), member of the International Society for Burn Injuries and also a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery as well as its director for the São Paulo Chapter and he is responsible for the plastic surgery back-up service at Albert Einstein Hospital and belongs to the clinical staff of Sirio Libanes Hospital.

Paolo Veronesi was born in Milan where he spent all his life, working as a surgeon and researcher. His professional work has been devoted to the study and treatment of cancer. He is Director of Breast Cancer Program and Director of the Breast Surgery Division at the European Institute of Oncology. Since Associate Professor in Surgery at the University of Milan.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan in 1986 (110/110 cum laude), specialized in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1991 (70/70 cum laude) and in General Surgery in 1996 (70/70 cum laude) at the same university.

His personal case series is among the largest in Europe, having operated on over 8,000 patients in the last 20 years, and his research and clinical contribution has been crucial for the IEO’s developmental innovations in breast cancer, which represent the most important international advances in the field. He has worked for the improvement of conservative surgery techniques for breast cancer, the development of the sentinel lymph node technique and intraoperative radiotherapy as a complement to conservative surgery.

Other major research fields, in collaboration with the Department of Oncology of Medical Senology, concern the experimentation of preoperative drug therapies. For patients requiring mastectomy, the close collaboration with the Plastic Surgery Division has enabled the development of “conservative” mastectomy, which preserves the aesthetic appearance of the breast while providing complete removal of the glandular tissue.

Since 2006, he is President of the Umberto Veronesi Foundation for the Progress of Science. President of the XXXIII National Congress of the Italian Society of Oncological Surgery (SICO), Paolo Veronesi has been invited to over 265 national and international congresses. He has authored over 290 scientific publications as well as 28 book chapters.
